Back in the 1920’s Carl Jung suggested that underlying personality types influence the type of work we are good at. Myers-Briggs further developed these profiles and Belbin introduced team roles. Both of these methods have a set of questions & evaluation criteria which you could use to develop team performance.

Alternatively, there’s the HOTS, which combines personality and team profiles in one simple and fun solution. Every organisation needs a mixture of Hares, Owls, Tigers and Squirrels:

Hares are ideas people who think randomly. They love coming up with ideas, but usually get bored once they’ve thought them through. They are very creative, but others may argue that they don’t implement them.

Owls like to think things through, they believe in tradition, proven solutions, and are good at spotting potential problems. They allow the team to see around corners at what might happen and can save a lot of time, trouble and money.

Tigers are unpredictable, but if they like an idea they will run with it and plan a strategy for success. They are the activists who make connections and action plans.

Squirrels like to turn plans into action and get the work done step-by-step. They are hard working, supportive, and predictable. Squirrels take basic ideas and make them work in practice. They are the people who will organise and run things smoothly.

Solutions are for Hares:
Brainstorming ideas to exploit opportunities and solve problems.

Planning is for Owls:
Picking the best ideas and making an action plan.

Implementation is for Tigers:
Working out the reference points for what could go right or what could go wrong.

Results are for Squirrels:
Getting the action plan to work.
